About Us

Welcome to Pankhurst Memorial Library

History

In 1928, local citizen, J. W. Pankhurst, donated money to build a new library.  The building was dedicated on May 27, 1929, and on July 6, 1929, Pankhurst Memorial Library circulated its first book.  Modern additions to the building include an ADA accessible ramp and lift as well as computer work stations with internet access.

As a member of the Illinois Library and Information Network (ILLINET), Pankhurst Memorial Library is committed to networking, which represents good public policy by maximizing the use of the resources of all types of libraries. Every library user benefits from expanded access to information beyond the four walls of a single library building.

Mission

It is Pankhurst Memorial Library’s mission to select, acquire, organize and preserve books and other materials of contemporary interest and permanent value for the education, enjoyment and intellectual stimulation of the entire community. The Library also strives to guide young people toward a love of reading and an awareness of books and other library materials as a means of satisfying their needs and interests.

FAQ

If you don’t find the answer you need here, call us at the circulation desk at 815-857-3925.

Currently we do not have a notary public

All material has a two week check out period.

– You may renew if there are no other requests for the material and you are in good standing
– There are no renewals on new books or reserve list

The Pankhurst Memorial Library is able to search other libraries through Inter Library Loan (ILL)for your request and have it sent to us. When we receive the item our staff will call you or send you a Facebook message, whichever you prefer. Books from ILL will be delivered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

If you live within the city limits of Amboy, you may get a library card free of charge, as part of your tax-supported library service for a period of 3 years.  If you live outside Amboy’s city limits, you may purchase a non-resident card for $50 which entitles you and your family to the borrowing privileges of a City of Amboy resident for a period of 1 year.

Your library card allows you to:

  • Borrow books from us and from most other public libraries in Illinois.
  • Use special online collections to find magazine articles and information you can’t get just by searching the web.
  • The ability to make interlibrary loan (ILL) requests for materials not found on our shelves.
  • Check out any of our wide selection of DVD’s, audio books, and even fishing poles!

To get a library card, stop by the circulation desk with a recent piece of mail that shows your current address.

To renew books and other items, you can stop by the circulation desk and re-check out your items or call 857-3925 and renew them via telephone.  You may leave a message on the answering machine if no one is available to take your call.

The Pankhurst Memorial Library will gladly accept any gently used books. We do however have several guidelines we like to follow when accepting donations:

* We do not accept paperbacks, textbooks, magazines, dictionaries, or encyclopedias.

* If we already have a copy or do not have room for the book we will place it on our “free exchange” rack. People are able to take a book, keep it, or bring it back free of charge.

OUR MOTTO ON USED BOOKS
We love books
of all shapes and sizes,
but with book donations
we don’t like surprises.

We’ll take your books
for our shelf or to sell,
if they’re in good condition
with no musty smell.

When you have books to bring,
just give us a call,
and we’ll let you know
if there’s room for them all.

Please don’t be upset
if we have to say no.
We don’t have much room
and some books have to go.
